Here's a quick tip on how NOT to answer a phone call from a collection agency!
Agents from collection agencies have ONE job: To verify who you are and that you owe the debt! They are then paid a commission on what you pay and the agency makes a BIG profit.
So, how can you combat these agencies who call you to collect on a debt they think you owe?
1. NEVER say "Yes, this is " Instead, you can say "What can I tell them this is regarding?" The agent will not discuss anything further without you verifying your name - stand firm and ask them to tell you what this is regarding, and ask who THEY are.
2. NEVER confirm your address. Again, this is a piece of information they use to validate you OWE the debt.
3. NEVER confirm that you owe the debt! (Even if you really do owe it). This might make you feel like you are lying - BUT YOU'RE NOT! The debt you owe was to the original creditor - NOT the collection agency! You did not have a contract or business relationship with them, and you can fight their collection efforts!
So what CAN you say in response to their call?
"I am sorry, but I do not recall owing this debt. Please send proof of the debt with my signature to the address you have on file and do not call again. Have a great day!" HANG UP.
This is all you need to say, and under the law, the collection agency MUST send you proof of the debt, or cease contacting you. Also, they can ONLY call you between the hours of 8AM and 9PM.
Lastly, collection agencies are forbidden to harass you with multiple calls per day once you ask them to stop calling you. If they continue to call you, they are in violation of the law. Keep a log of the dates, times, and name of the person who calls you, as you can take legal action against these agencies.
