How Stop-Loss Insurance Protects Employers

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-funding is that employers assume unlimited financial risk.

They don't.

Stop-loss insurance is designed to protect employers from unexpectedly large claims by limiting financial exposure.

Think of it as protection for your health plan.

Self-funded doesn't mean unprotected—it means having a strategy backed by safeguards.

📖 Defining the Difference: Fully Insured vs. Self-Funded

At first glance, both types of health plans provide valuable benefits to employees—but the way they're funded is very different.

➡️ Fully Insured: The insurance carrier assumes the responsibility for paying covered claims, while the employer purchases a group policy and pays a fixed premium.

➡️Self-Funded: The employer assumes responsibility for paying covered claims and partners with a Third-Party Administrator (TPA) for plan administration and stop-loss insurance to help protect against unexpectedly large claims.

Understanding this fundamental difference is the first step in evaluating which approach may be the better fit for an employer's goals.

Who Controls Your Health Plan?

👥 Who should decide what your health plan looks like?

With a traditional fully insured plan, much of the control belongs to the insurance carrier.

With self-funding, employers have far more flexibility to design benefits around their own workforce—not someone else's.

That means:
• More plan design options
• Better alignment with employee needs
• Greater control over healthcare spending

Sometimes, having more control is the biggest advantage of all.
