Labor Day weekend is the unofficial end of the summer season. As we enjoy a long weekend filled with family, friends and cookouts, let us remember the reason for this holiday: American laborers.

Laborers are the backbone of every community. In our homes and every place that we go, it is easy to take for granted how much we rely on our local plumbers and electricians to keep our pipes clear and our lights on.

As a COUNTRY Financial rep, I’m honored to provide commercial insurance coverage for those who are there when we need them most. Thank you to all the local pros who show up every day to keep our community running.

There are a lot of myths about life insurance floating around out there. According to the Life Insurance Statistics, Data and Industry Trends 2024 report published by Forbes, 52% of Americans say they don’t have life insurance because they believe it’s too expensive. In fact, 82% of people surveyed overestimate the cost of a life insurance policy, with a majority of people incorrectly estimating the cost of life insurance to be 3x as high as it actually is.

Why is this? The truth is, there may not be a very good reason for this belief. According to the 2024 Insurance Barometer Study Report, 54% of people surveyed said their life insurance cost estimate was based on “gut instinct” or a “wild guess.”

The right life insurance for your needs might be more affordable than you think. Contact me today to see how we can affordably enhance your life insurance coverage or get you set up with a policy from Forbes’ #1 ranked life insurance in the U.S.

We see the impact and power of life insurance every day. When tragedy struck Mary's family, she was able to lean on life insurance to help navigate her grief.

"(Life insurance) helped me start piecing my life back together again,” Mary said.

Earthquakes are unpredictable. If you live in an area prone to seismic events, having the right protection can make a huge difference in your ability to rebuild and support your family. However, it’s important to note that earthquake coverage is an optional insurance rider with a unique deductible. Here’s what you should know before discussing this coverage option with a COUNTRY Financial representative:

First off, earthquakes can occur anywhere. Though there are certain spots in the country that are more likely to suffer earthquakes, there is no location that is immune to the damage they can cause. The areas at the highest risk include Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Washington and the entire Mississippi River Valley.
Earthquake insurance covers repairs to your home and attached structures, personal belongings like furniture and clothes, and additional living expenses for when your home is uninhabitable after an earthquake.

Due to the unique damage that can be caused by an earthquake, this coverage does feature a unique deductible based on percentage rather than a standard amount (like $1,000 or $2,000). So, for example, if your earthquake deductible is 5% and an earthquake damages your house, your deductible would be 5% of the dwelling amount of insurance you have. If your dwelling coverage limit is $200,000 on your home, your deductible for your home structure (dwelling) would be $10,000. ($200,000 x .05)

If the earthquake also damages your personal property in your home, you’d be covered, but you’d have to pay the deductible on that coverage as well. If you have $100,000 in personal property coverage, you’d owe a $5,000 deductible on that part of the claim. ($100,000 x .05)

Don’t wait until you’re under a severe weather alert to gather supplies and make a safety plan. Start preparing today with these tips.
✔️ Have an emergency plan.
• Decide what your family will do if severe weather is headed your way.
• If you had to evacuate, where would you go? Identify family members or friends who live far enough away for you to get beyond the path of a hurricane, wildfire, or other natural disaster. Tell them you’d like to include them in your emergency evacuation plan and make sure they’re willing to take you in.
• If you have young children, walk through your plan with them, including how they should take shelter in your home.

✔️ Build an emergency preparedness kit. Put together a supply of essentials and safety items in an emergency kit.
Start with the basics:
• Three-to-five-days' supply of bottled water and nonperishable food
• Battery-operated flashlight
• Battery-operated radio and weather radio
• A first-aid kit
• Cell phone charger or battery source for your phone
• Personal hygiene items
• Blankets

✔️ Gather important personal information.
• Make sure you have phone numbers of neighbors, family, friends and utility companies in your phone.
• Keep copies of your insurance and property information in your emergency kit. Many insurers, like us, make this information available through their app. If you’re a client, download our COUNTRY Financial mobile app so these documents are easily accessible.
• Check to see if your healthcare provider offers online resources to store your medical information so it’s easy to access from your phone.
• Keep critical documents, like birth certificates, in a safe or another location you can get to if your home is damaged or destroyed.

✔️ Make sure your home and possessions are covered.
• Create a home inventory with your phone. Save it to the cloud and email a copy to your insurance agent.
• Meet with your insurance agent yearly to review your home insurance policy.
• Check your emergency fund to make sure there’s enough to cover your insurance deductible in case you experience major damage to your home.

Quick tips to get your home ready for Spring Thunderstorm season:

First, check your roof regularly for damage. Look for missing shingles, holes or any wear & tear that could lead to leaks. If you have an attic, check that, too. If you don’t want to do it yourself, hire a roof inspector, which is more affordable than you’d think.

Second, if you have a basement, check that your sump pump is working properly and has battery backup. Make sure your home insurance policy covers you for damage if your sump pump fails.

And third, trim your trees. Falling limbs can damage your roof, gutters or siding. If you’re worried about your tree’s health, hire an arborist to recommend how to trim it or remove it if it’s not healthy.
