I wanted to share a short encouragement piece from a friend, Brian Doyle. He is the founder and National Director of Iron Sharpens Iron.
‘Men Mentoring Men’
As I start in chapter one with another look at The Book of Proverbs, what is ‘the big idea’ of these thirty one chapters and hundreds and hundreds of nuggets of wisdom? Verse 4; It is...
“for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man”.
Solomon is doing what all older men should be doing. Invest time and energy into younger men who have lots of skills and talents but who simply lack experience!
So, what is shrewdness? - a discerning awareness; it is good judgment. Older men can teach and model good judgement and a discerning awareness to younger men who have not yet lived long enough to acquire this quality at the same level. This is best passed on to a younger man in the context of a relationship.
Big idea today: Do I presently have some potential relationships with younger men in my family or in my church? Who are they and am I investing in them?
I wanted to add a bit of a different perspective. Most of you probably know but my focus has been on dads teaching their children about money. When you think of money and investing, the concept goes like this. You take a small amount of money, with the future hope of it growing into a larger sum. Men, put on your dad hat. How are you investing in your children? Are you teaching your children how to be shrewd? Are you teaching you children how the world works and how to discern? Are you teaching your children how to utilize money?
Our world is moving very quickly. Your children and mine are growing up right before our eyes. Please take time and slow down to spend time with your family. I have one final question. Dad, if a jury looked at your schedule, what indictment charges would you receive for your time investments?
