🚲⚠️ NEW JERSEY E-BIKE RULES UPDATE ⚠️🚲

Starting July 19, 2026, New Jersey will begin enforcing updated regulations for e-bikes statewide, following guidance from the NJMVC.

Local law enforcement agencies will also be conducting educational checkpoints and outreach efforts “island-wide” to help riders understand the new requirements and how to stay compliant.

📋 Key rule changes include:
✔️ E-bikes will require registration
✔️ Liability insurance will be mandatory
✔️ Riders will need a valid license
❗ Riders under the age of 15 will not be permitted to operate
❗ Any speed or performance modifications will be illegal

These rules apply to all classes of e-bikes, so riders are urged to review the updates before getting on the road.

🚦 Officials say the goal is to improve safety for riders, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

📲 More info and official updates can be found here:

FYI:
New Jersey recently signed a new law that significantly changes how e-bikes and e-motos are regulated;
🔹 New E-Bike Classifications
• The previous 3-class e-bike system is being replaced.
• Many Class 2 and Class 3 e-bikes are now considered “motorized bicycles.”
• E-motos capable of speeds over 28 mph are treated as motorcycles under NJ law.
🔹 Licensing, Registration & Insurance
• Low-speed electric bicycles and motorized bicycles will now require:
• A license or permit
• Registration
• Insurance
• All related fees are waived for one year.
• Riders have six months to come into compliance.
🔹 Age Requirements
• No permits for riders under 15
• Riders ages 15–17 must have a valid motorized bicycle license or permit to operate these devices.
🔹 Testing Requirements
• A knowledge test (including how e-bikes operate) is required.
• A demonstration/skills test is also required.
• Testing locations will be determined by the State.
• Learner’s permits may be issued for up to 45 days.
🔹 Helmet Requirement
• Riders must wear a DOT-approved motorcycle helmet.
• Standard bicycle helmets do not meet this requirement.
🔹 Where These Devices Can Be Used
• Prohibited on roads with posted speed limits over 50 mph.
• The State may also restrict use on roads over 40 mph.
• Under NJ law, most public roadways fall under the definition of a “highway.”
🔹 Sales & Modifications
• Modification kits that increase speed or change classification are prohibited.
• E-bike sellers must provide registration forms at the time of sale.
• Online sales are temporarily prohibited for one year beginning January 20, 2026.

A BIT CONCERNING
Not ready to sound the alarm bells just yet, but simply put: I do not like what I see. Latest EURO that came out moments ago paints a pretty bad situation for the coast. One of the red flags we've been seeing over the past couple days is the suggestion that the nor'easter STALLS off-shore and lingers into Tuesday. If it stalls, we will undoubtedly be looking at some higher-end flooding. Solid moderate, perhaps major.

IF this stalls, WHERE it stalls is crucial. If it's close enough or slightly north, we may be in luck with winds more NORTH or NORTH-NORTHEAST. That prevents stacking of the bays. However, as the EURO has it? NE/ENE. Not good.

We will have tide height numbers by tonight and be able to project forward with realistic expectations by tomrrow morning.

At the moment, it's not a grab a paperbag and breathe into it. We see coastal storms ALL the time. Mainland will just see rain and wind. The coast will see more. The flooding aspect of it all is what gives me pause.

If there are no changes tonight / tomorrow, we will have to start prepping for a storm that will have a 4 out of 5 on the impact scale. HOPING for some sort of good news later on. Stay tuned!
