Letting someone borrow your car can create more questions than most drivers expect.

Which policy responds may depend on the vehicle, the driver, the permission given, and the language in each policy. Before handing over the keys, make sure the driver has a valid license and ask your agent how your coverage would apply.

“Full coverage” is not an official coverage listed on an auto policy. People usually use that phrase to describe a combination of collision and comprehensive coverage.

Collision generally helps with covered damage from hitting another vehicle or object. Comprehensive generally applies to covered losses such as theft, vandalism, fire, storm damage, or hitting an animal. Your exact protection still depends on the policy.

Your deductible is the portion of a covered claim you agree to pay.

If you have a $500 deductible and a covered loss totals $5,000, you would pay $500 and the insurance company would pay the remaining covered amount. Choosing a higher deductible may lower your premium, but it also means taking on more out-of-pocket cost when a claim happens.

Sending a student back to college? A quick policy review could save you money.

Students attending school more than 100 miles from home without a vehicle may qualify for a resident student discount. Many carriers also offer a good student discount for a B average or higher. These discounts can require updated proof, so they may not stay on the policy automatically.
