Turning 18 can bring new planning questions for a family supporting a loved one with special needs.

Who will help with decisions? What documents need attention? How will financial arrangements fit with the legal plan?

An attorney can explain decision making options based on the person's needs and abilities.

If you are unsure where to begin, feel free to reach out. I can help you organize your questions before that conversation.

Helping your child with college is a meaningful goal. Your own retirement belongs in the same conversation.

Before deciding what you can contribute, look at college costs, available savings, possible financial aid, and the other bills your household needs to cover.

A clear budget can make the conversation easier for everyone.

What do you wish someone had explained to you before paying for college?

What would another caregiver need to know to make your loved one's day feel familiar?

Their morning routine. Favorite foods. How they communicate. What helps when they feel overwhelmed.

A Letter of Intent gives families a place to capture those details for a loved one with special needs. It does not replace legal documents, but it helps future caregivers understand the person behind the plan.

Start small today: write down one routine you would want someone else to understand.

Your life has probably changed since you bought life insurance. Has your coverage kept up?

A new home, a growing family, or a change in income can be a good reason to take another look.

Start with four things: the coverage amount, how long it lasts, the premium, and the beneficiary.

If you are unsure what you have, feel free to reach out. I can help you understand your existing coverage and what questions to ask next.

Transition planning is about more than what happens after high school. Families may also need to prepare for changes in benefits, decision making, employment support, housing, transportation, and long term financial responsibilities. Starting early gives the family more time to learn, organize documents, and build relationships with the professionals and community organizations that may be involved. Even one completed step can make the next conversation easier.

Could your spouse or family find your important financial information if they needed it? A simple retirement file can list your accounts, policies, beneficiaries, legal documents, and important contacts. You do not need a complicated system. You just need one that the right person can understand.

When families begin planning for a loved one with special needs, the first question is often, Where do we start? A helpful starting point is to identify the people involved, the benefits currently being received, the legal documents already in place, and the financial resources that may support the plan. From there, the family can begin to see what is complete, what may need attention, and which professionals should be involved. Progress usually begins with organization, not perfection.

An ABLE account can help an eligible person with a disability save and pay for qualified disability expenses while maintaining access to certain public benefits. It is not the same as a Special Needs Trust, and the two tools may serve different purposes within the same plan. Families should understand who controls the account, what expenses qualify, how contributions work, and how the account fits with the rest of the plan. The IRS provides a helpful overview of ABLE accounts here:

The Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act permits a state to establish and maintain a new type of tax-advantaged savings program (under Section 529A of the Internal Revenue Code) for a qualified disabled person.

Being from the Baltimore area has made building relationships throughout Maryland especially meaningful to me.

Whether I am meeting with a family, helping with a community event, or speaking with a local organization, I want people to feel comfortable asking questions that may have been sitting on their minds for years.

Financial topics can feel overwhelming when they are filled with unfamiliar terms. Sometimes the best place to start is simply having a conversation and figuring out which questions need to be answered first.

Before your next financial conversation, take a few minutes to write down the questions you actually want answered. What income will I have each month in retirement? Who is listed as the beneficiary on each of my accounts and policies? What would happen financially if I became sick or could no longer work? Does my family know where my important documents are located? You do not need to understand every financial term before meeting with someone. A clear list of questions is often the best place to start. The purpose of the conversation should be to leave with more clarity than you had when you walked in.
