Everyone forgets things once in a while. And a change in cognitive skills is a normal part of aging. But it can be hard to tell when memory issues are a sign of something more serious. Luckily, spotting them early means there’s more time to prepare and find treatment.

It may be time to talk to your doctor if you notice (1):

- Taking longer to complete familiar tasks
- Forgetting common words when speaking
- Getting lost in familiar areas
- Having mood changes for no clear reason

These could be early signs of dementia, which is an umbrella term for various types of cognitive decline. Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, may also be causing these symptoms.
