This week's Local Business Spotlight is on one of Tempe's hidden gems—Sergio's Kitchen.
When you first meet Sergio, one thing becomes obvious: this isn't just a restaurant to him. It's the realization of a lifelong dream.
Born in Mexico, Sergio grew up surrounded by incredible food. As a teenager, he began washing dishes in a French-Asian fusion restaurant. Through hard work, he earned opportunities to cook alongside talented chefs and eventually continued developing his craft after moving to the United States, including time working with exceptional chefs in New York City.
Eighteen months ago, he opened his first brick-and-mortar restaurant here in Tempe—a dream he had carried with him ever since coming to America.
What makes Sergio's Kitchen different is that Sergio doesn't cook to follow trends. Instead, every dish reflects his own journey and the cuisines that have shaped him over the years. You'll find influences from Mexican, American, and Italian cooking coming together in a menu that's uniquely his own.
If it's your first visit, Sergio recommends trying the Chilaquiles—one of his personal favorites. If you've never had them before, think of them as a delicious Mexican comfort food that's somewhat similar to nachos, but with their own incredible twist.
When I asked Sergio what he's most proud of, his answer wasn't his restaurant.
It was his family.
He shared how he and his family came to America with very little. Learning a new language and building a life from scratch wasn't easy, but today he beams with pride talking about his daughters. Seeing them grow into successful women with strong character and great morals is one of his greatest accomplishments.
After spending time with Sergio, I walked away impressed by more than just the food. He's a man of deep faith, strong values, and a genuine love for people. You can feel it in the way he treats his customers and his staff. Everyone there is welcoming, joyful, and clearly enjoys what they do.
When I asked what the community could do to support local businesses, his answer was simple:
"Come check us out. Every new customer who walks through the door motivates me to keep doing what I love."
