In 1940, Ray Adam’s purchased the Whalehead Club on the Outer Banks of North Carolina for $25,000. He had dreams of selling off parcels of prime duck hunting land to potential investors like President Dwight Eisenhower and boxing champion Jack Dempsey. The property even included a man-made landing strip where those traveling by airplane could land and taxi up to the front door of the house.

What is the most challenging airport you’ve landed at?

Tensing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, Nepal is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, and also the gateway to Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park.

Named after Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmond Hillary, the first mountaineers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, the airport was built in 1964 but not paved until 2001.

The airport sits at an elevation of 9,334ft and is only 1,729ft long.

The world’s largest plane, Antonov AN-225 was destroyed while on the ground for maintenance near Kyiv.
Ukrainian officials estimate nearly $3 billion in damages, and 5 years of repairs to salvage the plane named “Mriya” which means “Dream” in Ukrainian. Mriya has seen more than 30 years of service, and was often called in to aid crises in other countries.
Notable aid efforts include delivering relief supplies to the neighboring Dominican Republic during the 2010 Haiti earthquake and transporting medical supplies in the early days of the pandemic to affected areas. Mriya first took flight in 1988 and has been in service ever since.
