For decades a 403b or 457 made sense because tax rates barely moved, so what you saved at 25 percent you often paid back around 25 percent decades later. That math does not hold up the same way today.
And if you are a state employee without an employer match on your 401k, that account loses a lot of its shine too. Worth asking your options include Roth, since it is taxed differently and can mean more of your money stays yours in retirement.
