Next year, the new limits for health savings accounts and high-deductible health plans are a slight bump, following 2024's largest-ever increase to the amount employees can set aside in their accounts.

HSA limit for 2024
Individuals can contribute up to $4,150 to their HSA accounts for 2024, and families can contribute up to $8,300. These amounts are approximately 7% higher than the HSA contribution limits for 2023. Catch-up contribution limits for taxpayers 55 and older remain unchanged at $1,000.

As part of the Public Health Emergency (PHE) in place since March 2020, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) prohibited states from disenrolling any Medicaid recipient during the PHE to help ensure continuous coverage. This resulted in the Medicaid population growing significantly. However, a provision in the federal Omnibus Bill signed in December 2022 decouples the PHE from CMS’s annual Medicaid enrollment process, and states are now required to resume annual Medicaid renewals.

Therefore, beginning April 1st, up to 18 million people nationwide may no longer be eligible for Medicaid coverage because of the redetermination process and likely will seek health insurance from another source, including employer-sponsored coverage. In Florida alone, we saw an increase of just over 30% in Medicaid enrollment during the pandemic.

What this means to us in Florida:

Florida may begin outreach of this change to their Medicaid beneficiaries early as March 30th
Terminations of impacted Medicaid beneficiaries to begin as early as April 30th and will last for 12 months
For those disenrolled from Medicaid, they may look to employer-sponsored health care to stay covered as part of a special enrollment period triggered by this qualifying event
