I recently got a phone call from a very close friend of mine who had just received a nonrenewal notice from his homeowner’s insurance company. His insurance company was also providing him with a new policy. The new policy includes “catastrophic ground cover collapse” sinkhole coverage, YEAH, but excludes “standard” or “full” or “complete” sinkhole coverage, BOO!

Watch this short video of sinkhole testing at my client's home. Notice how far the rod drops when the weight of the hammer is applied. This condition is known as weight of hammer (WOH) and is indicative of possible sinkhole activity.

Florida Legislators are Working Tirelessly to Gut Sinkhole Coverage. What will be left of the already weakened sinkhole coverage in property insurance policies when they are through? Given the history of the methodical erosion of what used to be meaningful coverage for sinkhole damage, I am wondering if there will be any coverage left to help policyholders if and when their property is damaged by sinkhole activity.
