I got my insurance license by accident when I was 22.
My aunts were claims adjusters. On a whim, I took a licensing class β I didn't tell anyone. I passed the exam, only to discover a month later I'd studied for the wrong line of insurance entirely.
That could have been the end of it. It wasn't.
At 25, I took my first job in insurance, in customer service. Over the following years, I moved through claims and bodily injury claims, learning the industry from the inside out.
Fast forward fifteen years, and everything changed at once.
I was let go from a job because I wanted to stay home with my children. As a single mom, I applied everywhere. No one called back. My license was about to lapse, and I had two weeks to find the money to renew it, all while trying to keep the lights on.
Then the phone rang. A company an hour away wanted to interview me to sell health insurance β base plus commission, work from home. I drove down.
When I got there, they told me it was commission-only.
I sat there terrified. I said yes anyway, because it meant I could stay home with my babies.
My manager asked how much I needed to earn each month. I told him: $3,000. That was the number that would cover my bills and let me keep my children home with me.
I got on the phone and started cold calling.
I dialed 300 calls a day, sitting in the dark, while my children slid notes under my office door and whispered to me between calls. My desk was buried in scattered papers, Post-its, and intake forms.
Meanwhile, my family and friends were out living their lives β vacations, dinners β while I sat at home in the dark, dialing. Looking back, it's almost funny.
I made my first sale that same day, half of what I needed for the month.
I became obsessed. I couldn't stop. I became known around the company as the one who didn't sleep. While everyone else was resting, I was building ad campaigns and testing new ways to reach people. It was, honestly, the best feeling in the world, not because of the money, but because I was helping people while building something entirely my own.
In five months, I sold a million dollars in health insurance.
This business completely changed my life. All it took was one person willing to take a chance on someone with two weeks and no safety net.
That person was me.
I just needed one sale to prove it was possible. The rest is history.
Today, I've built a business rooted in something simple: I love helping people. That same obsession never left, it just grew into a career I'm endlessly grateful for.
If you're standing where I once stood, scared, stretched thin, wondering if the leap is worth it, I promise you, it can be. Sometimes all it takes is one yes.
