Hi everyone, Curtis Peavy - Licensed Health/Life Insurance Broker broker here. I've been seeing quite a few posts about people looking for health insurance help with open enrollment upon us. Here are a few quick tips when choosing who to work with...
Every agent is going to tell you they can get you any plan. In reality, you should do a quick license search on that agent by going to Google and typing in "insurance license lookup". All you need is first and last name. Once that name comes up, click it and scroll down to see what companies that agent is actually appointed with. If you see only one company, those are the only plans that agent can offer you, meaning they are captive. Unfortunately, there are some bad apples out there who will tell you they can get you anything, but always circle back to the plans they offer.
Second, insurance isn't a one size fits all. ACA Marketplace may work well for some, while Private insurance may work better for others. Ask your agent to see all options and what works best for your specific situation.
Third, if someone offers you a $0 deductible PPO plan that isn't on the ACA Marketplace, it's usually too good to be true, and in that case, it means you have no max out of pocket, and could be on the hook for thousands of dollars in the event something major happens. These plans may work great for someone younger and super healthy, but again, not for everyone. If you have employer coverage with your family or spouse on there and want to save a few bucks, look into some options for just the family or spouse. Employer coverage is great for the employee, but usually skyrockets when adding family members on. Take a look, you may be surprised.
Lastly, I would highly recommend getting more than one quote. Someone may offer you a plan that sounds like gold, when in reality it is a polished turd. Best of luck to everyone looking, and if you need any assistance, feel free to leave a comment or shoot me a message!
