So I just reached my six year mark with IOA as a commercial property and casualty insurance broker. It's been a wild ride with a ton of hurdles and obstacles to overcome with the pandemic and one of the worst property markets the industry has seen in decades, but those obstacles really accelerated the learning curve so I could try to keep up with what no one could seem to keep track of. While I still consider myself somewhat of a generalist, these past few years have pushed me towards working the commercial property market more than anything because that's where everyone needed help the most. While we are still facing the wrath of a hard market, there are a few companies that have recently updated their guidelines for the betterment of the market within the last few months.

About a week ago, I was presented with an amazing opportunity! I met with some of the top underwriters over at AEU, who specialize in insuring businesses who need United States Longshore & Harbor Workers' Compensation coverage (USL&H) and Maritime Employers Liability (MEL), to find out they wanted to act as a partner in a huge way. For those who are forced by law to buy USL&H and MEL insurance coverage, I'm sure you already know that it is not cheap and pretty complicated stuff with the laws constantly changing. Well.. AEU has offered to accompany me when I meet with businesses they want to insure that fall into their class of business (shipbuilding, ship repair/conversion, stevedoring, freight handling, etc.) to help the owners understand the coverage better so they don't get themselves in trouble and make the quoting process 10x easier by getting all the information needed upfront. They also offer loss control to help mitigate risks and control losses. The commercial auto market has been a big loser for insurance companies over the past few years. The average loss ratio for 2020 was about 104%, which means that insurance companies had to pay out $4 for each $1 they received for auto premiums.
