Most people spend decades preparing for retirement. But have they prepared for what changes when they get there?

I often explain retirement like climbing a mountain. On the way up, you're accumulating. At the top, you're transitioning. On the way down, you're distributing.

The challenge is that many of the things that help you climb the mountain work very differently when it's time to come down.

Going Up the Mountain (Accumulation)

• Worry about dying too soon.
• An illness can interrupt your income.
• Volatility can be your friend.
• Tax deferral can be beneficial.
• Inflation often increases income.

Going Down the Mountain (Retirement)

• Worry about living too long.
• An illness can drain your assets.
• Volatility can become a threat.
• Tax deferral eventually comes due.
• Inflation can reduce spending power.

One of the biggest differences between accumulation and retirement is the ability to recover. While working, a setback can often be overcome with time, income, and planning. In retirement, the consequences of a setback can be much harder to reverse.

And that's before considering long-term care needs, unexpected life events, and the legacy you may want to leave behind.

Retirement isn't just about accumulating enough. It's about having a plan for what comes next.
