The Southeastern Credit Union Foundation and CUNA held a volunteer day for credit unions for the "leave behind" project in honor of the Republican National Convention. Credit unions spent the day building a sensory garden and planting more than 1,400 plants around the playground.

Miracle Jeans Day Support Materials are Ready!

Miracle Jeans Day is Credit Unions for Kids' second national campaign for 2012. On Wednesday, September 12, credit union employees across the country will wear jeans to work in exchange for a $5 donation to their local Children's Miracle Network Hospital!

Don't be afraid to get creative! The Northwest Credit Union Association is holding a Miracle Jeans Day at their annual meeting. Last year, the League of Southeastern Credit Unions encouraged employee participation by creating a competition among departments. Miracle Hat Day and Miracle Jersey Day have both been successful at credit unions where employees already wear jeans to work.

Volunteer day at All Children's is June 12th.

Please join us for a volunteer day at the "Leave Behind" playground project at All Children's Hospital in St. Pete. Volunteers are needed in three shifts: 8-10am, 10am-noon and noon-2pm. Volunteers will assist in the planting of the sensory garden, painting the walkway, and assembling wagons and other small items.

Still time to donate to AC&E Silent Auction

Once again, the League will host its Silent Auction at this year's AC&E. Like last year, the winning bids will have the option to go to LSCU Political Action Committees with every dollar being matched by LEVERAGE for Children’s Miracle Network. This is a great way to become involved in political advocacy while raising money for charity.

Credit union donations of auction items are essential to having a successful silent auction! Some examples of popular items for auction are electronics, sporting event tickets, jewelry, sports equipment, gift baskets, sports memorabilia, and vacation/spa packages. Also, check out the AC&E page to see some of the items we've already received.

Ground broken for "leave behind" project in St. Pete

Ground was broken and the "leave behind" project in St. Petersburg has officially begun in honor of the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August. Representatives of the LSCU, CUNA, All Children's Hospital, Rep. Bill Young (R-FL), St. Pete Mayor Bill Foster and the National Journal gathered on April 11, at the site of the new therapeutic playground, to turn the earth and get the project going. Over the next five months, a full playground that will be accessible for every child will be built by the time the convention opens.
LSCU President/CEO Patrick La Pine talked about how this project lines up with the credit union philosophy of "People Helping People." La Pine also noted that credit unions in the Tampa area are already working with the hospital.

"They have a long history of supporting All Children’s – from donating $1.5M to All Children’s to creating a 28-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to financing a state-of-the art dialysis wing to a new autism center."

Jonathan Ellen, MD, physician-in-chief and interim president of All Children’s Hospital spoke about how children will benefit from the new playground.

"Play is essential in helping kids to recover. Creating a unique space for all children to be therapeutic will have a lasting effect on the kids and their families."

The Southeastern Credit Union Foundation is leading the fundraising for the $300,000 project. Many credit unions were in attendance, including USF FCU which donated to the project at the groundbreaking. LEVERAGE, the League Service Corp., donated $30,000 to get the fundraising kicked off. CUNA Mutual Group, Corporate One and COOP Financial Services are also providing support for the undertaking.

Construction will continue throughout the summer with the installment of specially designed equipment. The project will include volunteer opportunities for credit union employees to lend a personal hand. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, which will mark the end of the construction and the opening of the playground, will take place during the week of the Republican National Convention, August 27-30 in Tampa-St. Pete.
