Oklahoma Farm Bureau president Stacy Simunek issued the following statement after poultry companies named in the State of Oklahoma v. Tyson Foods, Inc., lawsuit requested a stay following the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma’s judgment released December 19.

“Oklahoma Farm Bureau supports the poultry industry’s motion for stay in the State of Oklahoma v. Tyson Foods, Inc., lawsuit, especially in light of the court’s recent judgment that would irreparably harm Oklahoma poultry producers.

“Farm Bureau members maintain that family farmers will suffer the most under the court’s settlement. These are family farmers who have done everything asked of them, followed their state-approved nutrient management plans and managed poultry litter to reduce phosphorous levels in the Illinois River.

“From limiting application of natural poultry litter as fertilizer with no scientific basis to appointing a judicially immune, court-appointed special master to oversee remediation with no stated goals, this court decision will harm Oklahoma farmers if a stay is not granted.

“We encourage all sides to continue to work out a solution that will allow family poultry producers, our rural communities and our fellow Oklahomans to enjoy clean water, safe and affordable food, and a vibrant future for our rural neighbors.”

Oklahoma Farm Bureau President Stacy Simunek released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s announcement on Monday, Dec. 8, of $12 Billion in Farmer Bridge Assistance Program payments.

“Oklahoma Farm Bureau members appreciate the Trump administration’s commitment to support our nation’s farmers and ranchers with the announcement of Farmer Bridge Assistance Program payments.

“Our state’s agricultural producers are committed to producing affordable, safe, and healthy food, which requires us to put seeds in the ground without knowing what the market for our crops will be like come harvest time. Rising farm input prices have also put pressure on our farm and ranch members who are feeling the economic squeeze just like the families who purchase our agricultural products.

“These payments will help Oklahoma agricultural producers continue our important work of feeding America, and we are appreciative of President Trump’s and Sec. Rollins’ commitment to our farm and ranch families.”

We appreciate the efforts of our Oklahoma poultry growers, and the communities that they help support. Please do your part to be educated on the real issues surrounding the pending litigation.Oklahoma Farm Bureau has really stepped up to help our counties find ways to strengthen and support our poultry community. We also appreciate our area legislators for taking time to help organize, educate, and spread the word about the current steps that are being taken to remove the poultry industry from Northeast Oklahoma, and the huge economic impact that this would have on our rural communities. In many counties, the exodus of poultry could completely cripple a counties ability to support their schools, law-enforcement, county government, EMS services, healthcare and cause a further weakening of a Counties ability to maintain area roads and bridges.

Oklahoma Attorney General Genter Drummond continues to pursue a lawsuit against Tyson Foods and other poultry companies that operate in the Illinois River Watershed.

Thank you Oklahoma Farm Bureau for supporting Agriculture & Rural Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Farm Bureau President Stacy Simunek issued the following statement in response to news of Tyson Foods considering poultry operation reductions in eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas due to the long-running State of Oklahoma v. Tyson Foods, Inc., lawsuit.

“Oklahoma Farm Bureau members are deeply concerned by the recent news that Tyson Foods is considering reducing the number of farms with which they contract in both eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas due to the decades-long litigation that the state of Oklahoma has waged against Arkansas-based poultry companies over water quality in the Illinois River watershed.

“Oklahoma’s farmers and ranchers are proud stewards of the land who work daily to sustainably produce the food products that we all rely upon. Farmers and poultry growers in the Illinois River watershed have worked diligently over the last several decades to implement voluntary measures to improve water quality. Poultry growers are committed to following their state-approved nutrient management plans, which are based on phosphorous limitations, to protect water quality. They have also collaborated with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Oklahoma Conservation Commission to enhance their natural resources stewardship efforts.

“Reducing the number of poultry operations in eastern Oklahoma not only punishes farmers who have done everything asked of them, and more, to improve water quality in the watershed, but it also threatens food affordability and security for fellow Oklahomans and our nation’s residents who are already facing rising food costs. Our members also have real concerns about the negative economic impact any reductions will have on communities across eastern Oklahoma.

“We urge the state of Oklahoma to go back to the drawing board to reach a reasonable settlement that will recognize the decades-long environmental stewardship efforts that Oklahoma’s agricultural community has made while paving the way to a bright future for our family farmers, rural communities and consumers.”
