So, how much DO you need for a down payment? The answer: It depends. Conventional wisdom suggests you need 20% down to buy a home, but depending on the loan program you choose, you may be able to buy a home with as little as 5%, 3% or even 0% down. Down payment assistance programs are also available for eligible borrowers.
