If you have shopped for insurance, you know you have some options to select from. When it comes to liability the options start at $25,000 Per Person/$50,000 Per Occurrence, $50,000 Property Damage. You can double these up for instance, the next tier is $50K/$100K/ $25K or $50K or $100K/$300K/$100K and so on all the way up to $1 Million. The smaller combinations reduce your premium amount.

Liability is a required coverage, and it is the coverage that your insurance company will pay another party for bodily injuries and property damages caused by you if you are found liable. THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! I am sure you have seen many recent articles regarding fatality accidents and those families coming back to sue the driver at fault. What is the life of your loved one worth? Priceless right?

If you elect to carry the state minimums($25K/$50K/$25K) and are liable in an accident resulting in a lawsuit the average settlement in a fatality is $1.3M but your insurance company will only pay up to that $50K. Where do you suppose they will get the rest of the settlement? Assets, and wage garnishments are a couple of examples. If you think you don't have enough in assets right now to carry higher liability limits and protect your worth and/or if you are just shopping on price, you may need to consider a review of your policy. You may not have the assets now but If you find yourself in this situation and facing a lawsuit with insufficient coverage, you may pay for damages for many years following.
