Thinking about your expected retirement age? Learn what age most people are retiring, how they're getting there, and what strategy makes the most sense for you.

For almost a century, 65 has been seen as the age at which people retire in America. This is largely due to the original Social Security Act of 1935, which set the minimum age for full retirement benefits at 65, and since then, 65 has seemed like the magic number for retirement. "Houston, we've had a problem here."

A phrase that was altered to "Houston we have a problem" thanks to Thomas Hanks in the movie Apollo 13. However, 51 years ago Apollo 13 was launched into space, this was the third attempt by NASA at a lunar landing. Almost 56 hours into the mission the crew finished a TV broadcast, 9 minutes after the broadcast exposed wires near an oxygen tank sparked and ignited oxygen tank number 2 then tank number 1. At 9:08pm on April 13th crew member John Swigert uttered the famous phrase "Houston, we've had a problem here." Eventually the crew crashed down in the Pacific ocean on April 17th and was picked up by the USS Iwo Jima.
