Better than a sharknado I suppose.

The National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa coordinated with the City of Snyder/Scurry County Office of Emergency Management to conduct a damage assessment following the severe thunderstorm that impacted Scurry County and the community of Snyder on the evening of July 5, 2026.

After reviewing various video surveillance footage of the storm and the associated observed damage, it has been determined that a weather phenomenon known as a "gustnado" developed along the leading edge of severe thunderstorm outflow winds in Snyder and resulted in a narrow swath of roof and power pole damage. The estimated wind speeds were 90-100 mph.

A gustnado is a short-lived circulation that spins up along the leading edge of outflow winds from a thunderstorm and can rapidly develop with little to no advance warning. Unlike tornadoes, it is not attached to the base of a cloud. While rare, gustnadoes can still produce tornado-like damage to structures, trees, and power lines. The National Weather Service would like to thank the City of Snyder and Scurry County Office of Emergency Management for their assistance with the post-storm survey damage assessment.
