There are people out there who've been quietly frustrated for years, raising their hand and getting nothing back. They're not hard to find.

A new colleague of mine cold-called a business owner recently. Turns out he had spent almost a decade waiting for someone to actually listen. Then this one phone call changed everything. The people who need help are out there.

And the best part? That guy and I have become good friends. Turns out, when you keep good, genuine service at the center of how you do business, a cold call doesn’t have to feel cold at all.

Back in April, I hired someone who does something I've never done in my career: cold call businesses about their retirement plans.

And it taught me something I didn't expect about the people out there who've been quietly frustrated for years, just waiting for someone to actually help them.

When I was 20 and engaged—no kids, no debt—I bought as much life insurance as I could, with my fiancée as the beneficiary. Nobody told me to. I just wanted to take care of her. That instinct is usually a pretty good sign of how seriously someone takes providing for the people they love.

I don’t mean life insurance is the key (it’s not celebrated for its romance, you know.) 🤣 What I am talking about is showing authentic care about the other’s well being, goals, and successes, genuinely and frequently. Tender ways of showing gratitude & joy from day one onwards.

Here's a small shift that changes everything: you don't “have” to provide for the people who depend on you. You “get” to. Same facts, different color.

I've got a wife, kids, and one sand-eating grandson (we just went to the beach) counting on me, and I try hard to see that for the gift it is.

In the hardest moments, I remind myself that the other option is a pretty lonely one.

My grandson ate sand at the ocean last week, and somehow it got me thinking about something bigger than sandcastles: the awesome responsibility of the people who depend on us.

Check out my new article on why providing for your family isn't a burden to carry, but a noble thing to rise to.

Who inspired you this week? For me, it was a business owner losing sleep, not over his own retirement but over his employees'. First thing he asked me: "How do I do more for my people?"

Most people are good. It's nice to be reminded. 🙏

Not a lot of people know that the founder of our company, Primerica , wrote a book called “Pushing Up People,” and it focuses on the idea that you get ahead by lifting others up.

Last week, I saw this in action with a business owner committed to being a steward of his employees' futures. Grateful for people like him. Here’s more of our conversation: https://tinyurl.com/mt2re65d

A lot of us learn that winning means somebody else has to lose. But the best leaders I meet believe the opposite: you succeed by helping the people around you succeed. That's the only kind of winning that actually lasts.

I met a business owner this week who started our conversation with: "How do I do more for my people?" He’s got 25 employees working for his company, and he wanted to talk retirement strategies that would get them where they need to be.

What a remarkable gentleman. What a good day. More on why I admire his style here: https://tinyurl.com/mt2re65d

Ever get to the end of the month and wonder where your money went? Here's the fix: name every dollar. Before each month, give every single dollar in your paycheck a name—groceries, gas, savings, even fun. Because dollars without a job wander off.
