Type your income into an online life insurance calculator and it will probably tell you to buy a million dollars of coverage. Type in a different income and it will often tell you the same thing.

That is the trouble with generic formulas. They do not know whether you have three kids or none, twenty years left on a mortgage or a paid-off house, a working spouse or a single income.

A better way to think about it is to add up four things:

- Debts, including your mortgage and any loans your family would inherit.
- Final expenses, which can reach several thousand dollars or more.
- Income replacement, usually a portion of your pretax income rather than all of it.Education costs, if you have children who may go to college.

Add those together and you have a starting number that came from your actual life. Then adjust for savings, a spouse's income, and any coverage you already have through work.

Most people are surprised by the result in one direction or the other.

Have you ever run the numbers on your own coverage? If you have not, or if it has been a few years, reach out. We will walk through it with you.

🍎 Apple Cheddar Quesadillas

This is a perfect way to use the apple harvest, and is a great mid-day or after school snack! Serves 2

🍎 Ingredients

2 medium flour tortillas
1 small crisp apple, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 tsp. butter
Optional: 1 tsp. honey or Dijon mustard

🍎 Directions

Sprinkle half the cheese over one side of each tortilla. Add a single layer of apple slices and the remaining cheese.
Fold tortillas in half.

Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook quesadillas for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden and the cheese is melted. Alternately, toast in an air fryer at 300 for 10 minutes.

Slice into wedges. For a sweet-savory finish, drizzle lightly with honey; for a little tang, add Dijon before folding.

Driving, delivering, freelancing, consulting, creating. Millions of Americans work as independent contractors.

None of it comes with a benefits package.

If you work for yourself, you are your own HR department. Finding a health insurance plan is usually not the hardest part. It is that coverage decisions assume you know what you will earn this year, and gig income rarely cooperates. Estimate your income too low and you could owe money back at tax time. Estimate too high and you paid more every month than you needed to.

One more thing people forget. If you recently left a traditional job, you did not just lose the health plan. You likely lost dental, vision, disability coverage, and a life insurance policy you may not have known you had. For anyone whose income depends on being physically able to work, that disability piece matters.

Open enrollment for individual coverage opens in early November, so now is the time to sort it out. Want help comparing your options? Reach out. There is no cost to talk.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Oof, we know. This is something most parents don't think about, and why would they want to? But supplemental cancer insurance and critical illness coverage typically must be purchased before a diagnosis, since these conditions are treated as pre-existing once diagnosed. That's why the best time to consider this coverage is while your family is healthy. It won't prevent cancer, but it can help protect your family financially if you find yourself in this painful situation.

And, if you're already facing a diagnosis, we can talk to you about your coverage options and help you find ways to get assistance.

Reach out if you'd like to learn more about your options.

Between screen time, seasonal allergies, and dry indoor air, your eyes are working overtime. The good news: most environmental eye strain is preventable. Try the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds). Also, keep artificial tears handy, and consider a humidifier for dry indoor air or an air purifier for air that may be smoky or smoggy. Regular eye exams through vision insurance can also catch more serious problems early, before they affect your daily life.
