I’m going to be straight with you about something.
When someone tells me they are just going to go with the state minimum on their auto coverage I do not judge them. I understand it. Budgets are real and insurance is not exactly the most exciting thing to spend money on.
But I would not be doing my job if I did not explain what minimum coverage actually means in practice.
The state minimum exists to protect the other person. Not you.
It covers the damage you do to someone else’s car and their medical bills up to a limit. A limit that in most states has not been updated in decades and does not come close to reflecting what a serious accident actually costs in 2026.
If you cause an accident and the damages exceed your liability limits, the other party can come after your personal assets. Your savings. Your home. Your future income.
And minimum coverage does nothing for your own car or your own medical bills.
I am not trying to scare anyone. I just think you deserve to know what you are actually buying.
If you want to know what a better coverage option would actually cost you every month, I promise the number is more manageable than you think.
