What a great start to June! Anthony Pope and I were able to visit with my friend and mentor Jim Killen - State Farm Insurance Agent as he celebrates 50 years serving his community in York SC. Jimmy is a Georgetown SC native, a star football player for the Winyah High Gators and University of South Carolina Gamecocks.

It was great to visit with Jimmy, his wife Vicki, his son Jay Killen - State Farm Insurance Agent and daughter Elizabeth Miles who is a member of our team. We also had the chance to catch up with another State Farm Agent with Georgetown roots, Jack Cherry - State Farm Insurance Agent!

Georgetown ties to State Farm are strong. Winyah High School produced a dozen or more State Farm agents serving various communities in SC and NC.

Agents like Jimmy blazed a trail for State Farm agents everywhere. I’m honored to be his friend and proud of all that he has accomplished!

Today is the start of Atlantic hurricane season... please read that in an unenthusiastic voice! For the second half of the year (June 1st - November 30th), y'all have to deal with me telling you to buy beef jerky for your emergency kit and talk to your family about your evacuation zone.

EXCITING STUFF!

Below is the list of names that will be used this year. There is a name on this list that is near and dear to my heart... so hopefully that storm behaves whenever it ends up forming. If you share a name with one of this year's storms, make sure to have a heart-to-heart with the atmosphere so it stays out to sea!

The good news...there is currently no tropical activity forecast in the Atlantic over the next 7 days. This gives you plenty of time to talk to your family about creating an emergency plan and building an emergency kit!

Confused about what all of that means?!?!? Come on down to the Dorchester County Hurricane Expo and Family Fun Day this Saturday, 6/6, at Ashley River Park from 10 AM - 1 PM to meet tons of local organizations (including US National Weather Service Charleston SC) and learn all things hurricane preparedness! I mean, we have a helicopter landing during the event this year... ya have to come!

Our first comment-section prompt of the new year... If you could get rid of hurricane season and replace it with a different “season” of your choice, what would you choose?

Have a great start to your week!
