Back-to-school season is a great time to revisit the everyday habits that help keep kids safe and healthy. Our team at Dotterer Insurance knows how important it is for families to feel prepared, so here are a few simple reminders as you get your students ready for the year ahead.

• Help your kids memorize key information like their full name, your phone number, and your home address. A small laminated card in their backpack with this info and any important medical details can be a lifesaver.

• Reinforce good hygiene routines, especially handwashing, and remind them not to share food or drinks. These basics make a big difference in keeping illnesses from spreading.

• Check their backpack weight. It should be no more than 15% of their body weight, and using both shoulder straps helps protect their posture.

• Keep conversations about bullying open and honest. Talk about what signs to look for and who they can go to at school if they feel unsafe.

As families get ready for a new school year, we want to help keep students safe no matter how they get to campus. Here are a few quick reminders from our team at Dotterer Insurance:

Walking to school? Encourage kids to use sidewalks, cross at marked crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the road.

Riding a bike? A properly fitted helmet is essential. Remind them to ride with traffic, stop fully before crossing, and choose routes with lighter traffic when possible.
