This month, we are sharing a story that is a powerful reminder of what people can accomplish when they come together with a shared purpose.

Inside the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina, 6,500 volunteers worked around the clock to build over 10,000 beds in just 24 hours for children who did not have one of their own. Lowe's employees rolled up their sleeves alongside thousands of others to support the charity Sleep in Heavenly Peace, an organization dedicated to ensuring no child sleeps on the floor.

The effort was extraordinary in scale. Two hundred miles of raw lumber were transformed into 10,027 finished beds. Work was divided across 16 lines, with hundreds of people moving in sync through cutting, sanding, assembling, and finishing. When the tools finally went quiet, thousands of beds were stacked and ready for delivery to families across 36 states through 110 Sleep in Heavenly Peace chapters.

As one medical director of sleep medicine noted, without consistent, high-quality sleep, children can fall behind in ways that affect both their health and their learning. What these volunteers gave was more than just a bed. It was a foundation for something better. This story is a beautiful reminder that when people show up for one another, even the biggest goals become possible.

On September 11, 2001, evil came to our shores believing it could bring America to its knees.

It didn’t.

They knocked down buildings. They took innocent lives. They left families shattered and a nation grieving.

But they did not break the American spirit.

While others ran from danger, our first responders ran straight into it. Ordinary Americans became heroes. Strangers became neighbors. Flags went up on front porches, prayers were lifted, and a wounded nation stood shoulder to shoulder and refused to stay down.

That is the America we remember today.

An America that mourns its fallen, honors its heroes, defends its freedom, and gets back on its feet.

Twenty-five years later, we have not forgotten what was taken from us. We have not forgotten those who gave everything. And we have not forgotten what happens when Americans stand together.

They tried to bring America to her knees. They learned instead what generations before them already knew — Americans do not surrender.

We rise. We fight. We endure. And we defend the freedom so many have sacrificed everything to protect.

We are still here. We are still free. And we are still the United States of America.

With summer behind us and routines back in full swing, fall brings a natural time to reflect on progress made and refocus on the progress ahead.

However, progress doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes it’s fast and visible. Other times, it’s quiet and barely noticeable.

What matters most is that we keep moving, even when the pace feels slower than we would like. We don’t have to have it all figured out. We just have to keep going.

Back-to-school season presents a good opportunity to ensure your kids are equipped with the habits and knowledge to stay safe throughout the school day. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

🔵Make sure your children know their full names, your phone number, home addresses, and how to reach a trusted adult. A laminated safety card kept in their backpack with this info, plus any medical conditions, can be a good addition.

🔵Teach and reinforce proper hand-washing, and remind them not to share food or drink. These simple habits go a long way toward keeping illnesses from spreading through the classroom.

🔵A backpack should weigh no more than 15% of your child's body weight, and both straps should always be used to evenly distribute the load on your child’s back. An overstuffed bag can cause real strain over time.

🔵Talk with your child about bullying — how to recognize it, how to report it, and who their designated trusted adult at school is if they ever feel unsafe or need help.

🔵 Avoid putting your child's first name on the outside of backpacks or lunch boxes; initials or names on the inside are a safer option for labeling belongings.

At-school safety is a collective effort, and taking precautions for your students can help keep students across your community safe.
