A step back in history...
First Policy Issued, 1922

State Farm Mutual, incorporated March 29, 1922, began accepting applications for auto insurance from farmers. After the Company’s founding on June 7, G.J. issued the first handwritten policy for Henry B. Stubblefield’s 1919 Hudson Sedan. Stubblefield paid a $15 membership, a $45 deposit, and a semi-annual of $11.17.

Step back in history...
Mecherle’s Auto Policy ... Cancelled?

According to rumor, G.J. Mecherle caused a few fender benders during his tenure as president of State Farm. An employee decided to play a joke on our founder.

Dated June 6, 1929, this ‘cancellation letter’ to G.J. explains the Company is compelled to cancel his insurance due to his reckless driving. The signature on the letter is purposefully illegible, and the writer claimed to be from the nonexistent ‘Poor Risk Department.’ The bottom of the letter states, “This paper was made from cornstalks.” Presumably, G.J. took the joke in good stride.
