KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: E-BIKES vs. E-MOTOS

The Sturgis Department of Public Safety continues to receive complaints regarding e-bikes and e-motos on city roadways.

While e-bikes are often treated by law as bicycles, it's important to understand the difference between an e-bike and an e-moto — the latter is not authorized on any public road or sidewalk unless properly licensed.

In many cases, improper use of e-bikes and e-motos creates a significant hazard on the roadway.

🔹 E-Bikes (Class 1, 2, or 3) have fully operable pedals and a motor that stops assisting at 20–28 mph. These may legally be ridden on most roadways, shoulders, and bike lanes.

🔹 E-Motos — those without pedals, or capable of traveling faster than 28 mph — are legally classified as a moped or motorcycle. They are not permitted on public roads or sidewalks unless the rider is properly licensed by the Michigan Secretary of State and the vehicle is registered and equipped accordingly.

Please use caution when operating an e-bike on city streets, and make sure your device falls within a legal e-bike classification before riding on the roadway.
