For decades, the retirement planning conversation at big wirehouse firms was almost entirely about one thing: growing the pile.

How much you'd accumulate. What rate of return to project. How big the number would be at 65.

What rarely came up? How much of that pile the IRS would take first.

That's something our team thinks about differently — and it starts with a window many pre-retirees don't even know they have.

The years between retirement and age 73 (when Required Minimum Distributions begin) can be one of the most tax-efficient windows you'll ever see. Income is often lower. Brackets may be temporarily favorable. And depending on your situation, Medicare IRMAA surcharges may not yet be a factor.

For many people, this is the ideal time to explore Roth conversions — moving money from a traditional IRA into a Roth, paying tax now at a potentially lower rate, so future distributions are tax-free.

It's not right for everyone. It depends on your bracket, your timeline, and your overall income picture. But it's absolutely worth exploring with your advisor before RMDs arrive and take that flexibility away.

Our free guide walks through how Roth conversions and Medicare surcharges interact — so you can go into that conversation informed.

Here's a question worth sitting with this Sunday morning ☀️

Is your retirement account working *against* you at tax time — and would you even know if it was?

Most people in their 60s draw from whatever account feels most logical. Usually a traditional IRA or 401(k). It makes sense on the surface.

But pulling from the wrong account in the wrong year can quietly push you into a higher tax bracket, trigger Medicare surcharges, or shrink the Social Security check you actually keep after taxes.

There's a concept called tax bracket management — intentionally choosing *which* account to draw from each year based on your full income picture. Social Security, RMDs, pension, investment income — all of it, mapped out together.

For some retirees, this one decision makes a meaningful difference in lifetime taxes. It's not complicated. But it does require someone looking at the whole board, not just one piece.

Curious how IRMAA surcharges factor in? We put together a free guide on exactly that 👇

The Florida dream is real. No state income tax, warm winters, waterfront living — it's hard not to fall in love with the Treasure Coast.

But we see the same thing happen often: the lifestyle part of the move gets all the attention, and the financial paperwork quietly gets pushed to "later."

A few things worth reviewing if you moved to Florida in the past year — or if you're planning to:

✅ The Homestead Exemption application window (easy to miss if you're not watching the calendar)
✅ Declaration of Domicile — this is how Florida officially recognizes you as a resident
✅ Updating your estate documents to reflect Florida law

None of these are complicated. But timing matters — and "we'll get to it" has a way of turning into a costly delay.

If you're not sure where you stand, our Florida Relocation Guide walks through exactly what needs to happen and when.

The biggest missed opportunity in retirement planning isn't flashy. It's a window most families don't even know exists.

Here's what we've observed after 30+ years in wealth management:

When you retire, your income often drops significantly — sometimes for the first time in decades. Social Security hasn't fully kicked in. RMDs haven't started yet. For a brief window, you may be sitting in a lower tax bracket than you've seen in years.

That's the Roth conversion window.

A Roth conversion doesn't eliminate the tax — it repositions it. You pay at today's potentially lower rate. Future withdrawals from that Roth account come out completely tax-free.

And here in Florida? No state income tax means the math often looks even better than it would in other states.

The challenge is that window closes. Once RMDs begin pushing income back up, the opportunity shrinks — sometimes dramatically.

Before year-end is a smart time to run the numbers with your advisor and see if your situation makes sense for a conversion.

We put together a guide specifically on this topic — how Roth conversions interact with Medicare surcharges and your income timeline in retirement.
