Been there. Done captive. Built independent.

When Patrick and I left the captive space and started our own independent agency, we knew we wanted ownership, choice, and control over the business we were building.

But we also knew independence came with real responsibility — carrier relationships to build, operations to run, teams to lead, systems to choose, and risk to own.

As we explored the options available, many models felt like another version of what we had just left: support with too many controls, ownership with too many restrictions, and independence that did not feel fully independent.

That recognition became part of the genesis of State Insurance Group.

We built SIG differently — for agency owners who want to be independent without being isolated.

Many SIG agency owners came from the captive space too. They understand what it feels like to wonder if there is another way to build.

When agents ask us about going independent, they almost always ask the wrong first question: “What do I need to buy?”

The real question they should be asking is: what do you not need to spend money on to scale quickly — and what’s actually worth the investment?

Most agents overspend on the wrong things early and underinvest in the one thing that moves the needle: direct carrier access.

The majority of our agents who’ve made the move from captive to independent are earning more than they were before — and they’re not looking back.

One of the hardest parts of being an agent is knowing you can help a good client—but not having the carrier options to do it.
