Did you know.....

Special enrollment conditions for health insurance allow you to enroll in or change your health plan outside of the regular Open Enrollment Period if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE).

Some common QLEs include:

1. Loss of Health Coverage

- Losing employer-sponsored insurance (e.g., job loss, reduction in work hours)
- Aging out of a parent's plan at 26
- Losing Medicaid or CHIP eligibility
- Losing COBRA coverage

2. Household Changes

- Marriage or divorce
- Having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child for adoption/foster care
- Death of a family member that changes your eligibility

3. Change in Residence

- Moving to a new ZIP code or county
- Moving to or from a shelter or transitional housing
- A student moving to or from school
- Seasonal workers moving for work

4. Other Special Circumstances

- Becoming a U.S. citizen or gaining lawful presence
- Leaving incarceration
- Changes in income that affect eligibility for subsidies
- Employer plan changes that make coverage unaffordable

In most cases, you have 60 days from the event to enroll in a new plan. If you miss this window, you may have to wait until the next Open Enrollment Period.

Some of the most frequent questions we are asked relate to the following health insurance terms, it's important you understand how they interact when purchasing health insurance. Sometimes the lowest premium is not your most cost effective option !

Deductible – The amount you must pay out of pocket for healthcare services before your insurance starts covering costs. For example, if your deductible is $2,000, you must pay this amount first before your plan covers services (except for preventive care, which may be covered without meeting the deductible).

Copay (Co-payment) – A fixed amount you pay for specific healthcare services, such as doctor visits or prescriptions. For example, a $30 copay for a specialist visit means you pay $30, and insurance covers the rest. Co-pays often apply even after meeting your deductible.

Max Out-of-Pocket (MOOP) – The maximum amount you will pay for covered healthcare services in a year, including deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance. Once you reach this limit, insurance covers 100% of covered services for the rest of the year.

Premium – The amount you pay for health insurance coverage, usually monthly. This is separate from out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and co-pays. Even if you don’t use medical services, you still have to pay your premium to keep coverage active.
