The Purpose And Importance of Building Background Knowledge in Achieving Success for Adult English Language Learners
For adult ELLs, the importance of background knowledge is heightened by the diversity of their educational, professional, and life experiences.
Adults may bring rich prior knowledge from their native language and culture, but they often encounter gaps when engaging with English texts that assume familiarity with U.S. culture, history, or specific academic content.
These gaps can hinder comprehension and slow the learning process.
Research demonstrates that when learners have sufficient background knowledge, they can compensate for weaker language skills and still achieve high levels of understanding.
For example, the well-known "baseball study" found that students with strong topic knowledge, even if their reading skills were limited, performed as well as skilled readers with less topic knowledge when comprehending related texts.
