FYI
As the year draws to a close, Congress has still not renewed the enhanced premium tax credits that make healthcare affordable for millions of Americans. As of today, we expect the enhanced tax credits to expire on December 31st.
What you need to know:
Last week, four House Republicans from swing districts joined Democrats to successfully advance a bipartisan “discharge petition” that will force the House to vote on a clean, three-year extension of the enhanced tax credits in January. This was a significant bipartisan development, especially after the Senate voted down an alternative Republican healthcare proposal to fund health savings accounts.
The House did pass a Republican health bill titled the “Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act,” which includes alternative healthcare proposals but notably does not extend enhanced tax credits.
What’s next?
Next month, the House will vote on the clean, three-year extension of the enhanced tax credits as required by the discharge petition. Congress will also need to pass a continuing resolution to avert a government shutdown by January 30, which could be an additional opportunity to include the renewal of the enhanced tax credits.
