An arctic cold front is forecasted to impact much of the country this week, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing for several days. Use these tips to help avoid water damage from frozen pipes and ensure safety during the cold snap.
Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes:
•Disconnect garden hoses from exterior spigots. Even frost-proof faucets need hoses removed to allow residual water to drain.
•Shut off indoor valves that supply outdoor faucets, and open the outdoor faucets to drain the remaining water. Keep them open while the water supply is off during freezing weather.
•Close garage doors to protect pipes located in garages from extreme cold.
•Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warmer air circulate around plumbing.
•Allow a small, steady drip from faucets connected to pipes prone to freezing.
•Keep your home’s thermostat set to at least 55°F, even if you're away.
•Address areas vulnerable to freezing, like previously problematic spots, by consulting a plumber or contractor for solutions before the cold weather hits.
What to Do if a Pipe Freezes:
•Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warmer air circulate around the plumbing.
•Turn off the main water valve immediately to minimize damage, especially before temperatures rise above freezing.
•Safely inspect accessible pipes, such as those in attics or crawl spaces, for damage.
•As the weather warms, listen for water leaks and inspect plumbing.
•If you detect a leak, keep the water off. Open all faucets to drain remaining water and contact a licensed plumber for repairs.
•If no leaks are found, slowly turn the water back on while continuing to check for any signs of leakage.
•Avoid using open flames like torches or heat guns to thaw pipes, as they pose fire hazards.
•If you detect a leak, keep the water off. Open all faucets to drain the remaining water and contact a licensed plumber for repairs.
