Be on alert 🚨‼️
City of Stevens Point Warns Public of Ongoing Scam Involving Fraudulent Invoices
The City of Stevens Point is warning residents and businesses to be on alert for a scam involving fraudulent invoices that falsely claim to be from City departments. A recent case involved a fake invoice appearing to come from the Planning & Zoning Commission, requesting payment via wire transfer for services such as inspections and application reviews.
Please be aware of the following important facts about legitimate City communications:
• The City of Stevens Point will never request payment via wire transfer.
• All official City correspondence will come from an email ending in “.com” or another verified government domain.
• City departments will never request communication strictly by email without providing an official phone number that can also be used.
• City invoices will never include vague instructions to return payment receipts for “agenda inclusion” or other suspicious requests.
If you receive any questionable correspondence claiming to be from the City, especially those requesting urgent payment or containing unfamiliar contact information, do not respond or send
any money. Instead, contact City Hall directly to verify the legitimacy of the request.
This scam appears sophisticated, with detailed formatting and false itemization to appear credible. We urge everyone to remain cautious and report any suspicious invoices or communications.
If you have any questions or believe you have been targeted by this scam, please contact the City of Stevens Point at 715-346-1501 for verification and support. The City is actively monitoring the situation and working to prevent future fraudulent activity. Your
vigilance helps protect not only yourself but our entire community
