Most investors think their biggest risk is the market.
It's not. It's their own mind.
In Part I of the Enemy in the Mirror, I covered the emotional traps - loss aversion, panic selling, recency biases. The ones that feel like fear.
Part II is different.
These five are quieter. Cognitive, not emotional. And in my experience, harder to catch - because the feel like rational thinking.
Confirmation bias. Anchoring. The availability heuristic.
You're not being irrational. You're just being human. So am I.
The goal isn't to feel foolish. It's to name the pattern before it costs you.

All-time highs feel like a ceiling, but the data suggests they've historically been a sign of ongoing strength—not an automatic "top." In an updated S&P 500 study (1950–2026), buying only on all-time-high (ATH) days outperformed buying on any random day over every horizon tested :
• 1-year forward return: Any day +11.2% vs ATH-only +14.1% (+2.9% advantage)
• 3-year forward return: Any day +37.8% vs ATH-only +46.8% (+9.0% advantage)
• 5-year forward return: Any day +68.2% vs ATH-only +75.8% (+7.6% advantage)
ATHs also aren't rare. From 1950–2026 the index was at a record high on 1,490 of 19,152 trading days (~7.8%), averaging ~19.6 ATHs per year . And the "buying the top" fear is less common than people think: after an ATH, a 10%+ correction happened about 11% of the time within 1 year, 4% within 3 years, and ~1% within 5 years .
