It was Halloween Night at South Iredell High School with the Vikings taking on the Davie County High School War Eagles. What a game! Sheesh.

While this game and honestly, the season didn’t go the way this young, hard fighting Viking team wanted it to go, they showed grit and determination proving that next year will be a different story. The game started out with an interception by South to Davie’s free safety. That lead to Davie’s short field then followed by a touchdown and a two point conversion. South then throws another pick but is held to a missed field goal. The Viking’s defense was strong in the game, holding the War Eagles to 8 points at the half.

The star of South’s offense Brody Hunt had a home run ball slip through his hands in the second half that would have been a 96 yard TD. South didn’t let that hold them back. They fired right back and got to within 2 points. 8-6. Within winning distance. South is holding Davie down behind the defensive effort of everyone but #8 Xavier Farley batting down at least 4 balls and getting to the ball carrier constantly. But, the nail in the coffin comes from a touchdown pass to #2 Ethan Driver. A pass reminiscent of the Joe Montana to Dwight Clark(for those of you football fans), deep into the end zone to a leaping receiver. Man, heck of a catch. That proved to be the difference maker.

But South will be back next year. And from what I saw in the progression of these young men, the fight, the determination, grit, and character, they will make some waves next year.

Not to be forgotten, pictured is #18 Jon Michael Taylor and #2 Donovan Henderson firm last weeks tilt against North Iredell that saw South victorious. Taylor as the Defensive player and Henderson as the Offensive. If you see any of these young men, give them a big congrats and some words of encouragement. But really, the true winners are the kids that these funds get passed on to. Helping raise up future farmers and supporting the community is what it’s all about. Congrats fellas. We’ll hold onto the title until next year.

Good evening and happy Friday football fans. We’re back with another edition of “Player of the Game,” presented by yours truly. This is opening week of conference play here in good ol’ Iredell County. Mooresville High School Blue Devils vs the Vikings of South Iredell High School.

These young men from Mooresville came in having done the hard work and preparation for this and boy, did it show. Having a 3-2 record but playing some of the top talent in the state, the Blue Devils came in with something to prove. They can run over opponents. And they did. Opening drive, marched right down the field and scored. South did counter with a great drive but settling for a field goal. The only points that came on a sustained drive. After that, it was all Mooresville. A score ending in 48-10, the 7 other points coming from a dropped interception by Mooresville tha Brody Hunt caught while it was still in the air and took it to the house. But aside from that, Mooresville controlled every aspect of the game. Tight End Gavin Barber had 2 receiving touchdowns, one of which was close to 70 yards. Offensive Player of the Game was a lock for him. With Jordan Cleaves putting points on the board with a pick 6. Defensive player of the game was written all over that play.

Special thanks to WHIP Radio for broadcasting tonight and being in Viking Valley. Great listening to on air personalities talk so emphatically about local sports. Lake Norman will be in Viking Valley next week for South’s homecoming. Hopefully these young men can learn from this and rebound. Big matchup there.
