Only JESUS is KING of kings AND LORD of lords on earth, heaven and everywhere in between!! AMEN!!
Between Google, Apple, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Elon Musk's various enterprises, there is power to know everything and control everyone.
But more is available. The winner of the "AGI" (Artificial General Intelligence) or "Singularity" race stands to gain previously unimaginable world power.
As I reflected on this, and the title of Jesus in Revelation 1:5 - "The ruler of the kings on earth" - I realised that heads of government are no longer the only "rulers" in our world.
At the time those words were written, the Roman Empire was the big problem. The readers were being reminded that Rome was not the final authority.
The second chapter of Luke’s Gospel opens with the words, “In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered” (Luke 2:1).
No doubt Caesar thought that was his decision and his alone. But his decision was in the hand of God, who intended to fulfil a prophecy about Bethlehem.
In their arrogance, many a ruler has sought to thwart God. Pharaoh told the Hebrew midwives, “If it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live” (Exodus 1:16).
But God was unshaken. That very edict became the reason why Moses was hidden in bulrushes and discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter. His own adopted son was the vessel God used to do the very thing he feared.
No king can stop God.
That includes our big tech "kings" of today.
They admit they're nervous about the consequences of AGI. The phrase Musk used was “existential dread.”
But they won’t stop. The power promised to the winner is just too great to resist.
In this matter, we can remember that Babel was never finished. As God looked on at this ancient equivalent of the “whole world on a single platform,” He said something like, “They don’t even know what they’re doing.”
The trouble with human-made systems is that they find their blueprints in humanity. That is, their blueprint is one corrupted by sin. A “perfect” platform is nothing more than a platform that has perfected its sinfulness.
That is why God has built a law of nature into the fabric of this world, that no power can ever become absolute. It always dies first. Absolute power is His alone.
As we look out at the powers in our world, whether it be the national leaders, the tech bros, or others… we feel concerned. We legitimately wonder, “Do they have our best interests at heart?” The answer seems obvious.
The tech world cannot separate their race to power and glory from their other goals, however noble. Our governments seem increasingly deaf to the concerns of the ordinary man – even scornful of them. They live in a world of glitter and private planes, removed from reality.
But we need not wonder when it comes to the Ruler of the kings on earth.
The very next verse reminds us that this is “him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father.”
He had our true interests in His heart before we ever knew what they were, and not one thing He has ever done has failed to serve them.
Just as truly as Anthony Albanese is Prime Minister of Australia, Christ is the Ruler of the kings on earth.
Take heart.
