Friends and Neighbors, I’m excited to announce my campaign for City Council in Ward 6!

I am running on a Democratic Socialist platform because Ward 6 deserves a City Council Member that will stand with all of our neighborhoods – from Cedar-Riverside, Ventura Village, and Seward to Elliot Park, Phillips West, and Steven’s Square/Loring Heights – to uplift the issues and vision of the people.

This pandemic has exposed what many have known for too long, that our systems are failing us. With an open seat, this is an opportunity to bring together working people of all backgrounds to push for rent control, protect and expand public housing, address the opioid crisis through restorative justice, oppose the gentrification of our communities, and demand green & healthy neighborhoods.

My lived experiences give me a deep understanding of the issues facing our ward. I was raised in public housing and had problems adjusting into society, which resulted in run-ins with law enforcement and eventually to me dropping out of high school. After the crash of the global economy in 2008, I lost my job and decided to dramatically change my life.
With the support of my community and family I went on to gain my Associate’s from Normandale Community College and then my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities where I was the first Somali-American commencement speaker for the College of Liberal Arts. From there I enrolled in Mitchell Hamline School of Law and received my Juris Doctorate.

With my law degree I decided to give back to my community which has given so much to me. Today, I mediate in Hennepin County Housing Court and Harassment Court, where I work to resolve landlord-tenant disputes in order for both parties to avoid burdensome eviction proceedings. Previously, I have led efforts within schools to combat the abuse and discrimination of teaching assistants and the students themselves.
Our campaign will be fought by bringing working ‘Ward Sixers’ of all communities together to demand an end to massive inequality and rising gentrification. Together with your support we can build a system that works FOR US.
