Following the tragic passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, reports indicate that his widow was excluded from death benefits entirely—because she was never named as a beneficiary. Their child has since been identified as a beneficiary for some benefits, but the damage of an outdated plan is unfolding publicly.

This is exactly why estate planning matters—and why updating it annually (or at least after EVERY major life event) is non-negotiable.

✅ Got married? Update your plan.
✅ Had a child? Update your plan.
✅ Divorced? Update your plan.
✅ Acquired new assets? Update your plan.

Your loved ones shouldn't have to fight for what you meant to leave them. And it's more affordable to plan ahead than you might think. Estate planning is for everyone, not just for the wealthy.

Building wealth isn't about a lucky break—it's about following the right steps, in the right order.

Here's a common blueprint (shoutout to Ramit Sethi for popularizing this):

1️⃣ Knock out high-interest debt
2️⃣ Switch to a bank that pays you—high interest, no fees
3️⃣ Open your brokerage & retirement accounts—grab that employer match ASAP, it's free money
4️⃣ Build a conscious spending plan (budgeting, but make it sustainable)
5️⃣ Automate everything—bills, savings, investing. Future you will thank present you
6️⃣ Invest long-term & low-effort—index funds and target-date funds are your friends

💡 The real foundation? An emergency fund + paying off high-interest debt, first.

After that, it's not always either/or—you can pay down low-interest debt AND invest at the same time. Don't let "perfect" delay your progress; and don't delay investing and generating multiple income streams for longer than necessary. If you can pay low-interest debt and investing at the same time, for for it. If you can't, debt takes priority.

Wealth isn't built overnight. It's built one intentional step at a time. 🌱 And, of course, it's not how much wealth you create that matters: it's how much wealth you keep and protect. That's a conversation for another day! lol
