Labor Day is one of those holidays that sneaks up on us. For some, it’s the last backyard barbecue of the summer. For others, it’s the kids heading back to school. For many, it’s just the gift of an extra day to breathe.
But the story behind Labor Day is one worth slowing down to remember. In the late 1800s, workers across the United States were facing dangerous factories, endless hours, and little protection. Men, women, and even children were expected to give everything to their jobs with almost nothing in return. Out of that hardship grew the labor movement… And from many marches and strikes came ideas we now take for granted:
- The 8-hour workday instead of 12 or 14
- Weekends to spend with family
- Workplace safety laws
- Fair wages and collective bargaining
