The Hat and Umbrella:

The last time my dad walked out of his office, he left behind two things - his hat and his umbrella. It was unlike him to forget anything, but maybe, in some way, he knew he was leaving more than just objects behind.

Dad was the kind of man who never said no when someone needed help. He built his insurance agency not just with policies and paperwork, but with trust. Deals weren’t just made in an office—they happened at the kitchen table, over a cup of coffee, sometimes with a handshake and a story.

When I took over the agency, I thought I understood what he did. But it wasn’t until I started hearing from his clients—neighbors, friends, strangers who he had quietly helped—that I realized how much more he had given. He didn’t just sell insurance. He showed up. He helped move furniture, clean out basements, and even cut down trees when no one else could.

I still try to do things his way. I still meet clients at the kitchen table. I still answer the phone, no matter the hour. Because that’s what Dad would have done.

I miss him every day. Clients still share stories about him, reminding me of the big shoes I have to fill. And every day when I walk into the office, I see his old hat and umbrella sitting by the door—right where he left them. A reminder that his work, his kindness, and his way of doing things, never really left at all.

If your water lines are freezing and starting to thaw, taking immediate action is important to prevent any potential damage from burst pipes or flooding. Here's what you can do:

1. Turn off the Water Supply
Shut off the main water valve to prevent water from flowing through the pipes until the thawing process is safe.
2. Open Faucets
Open faucets (both hot and cold) that are connected to the frozen pipes. This will help relieve pressure in the system as the ice melts and reduce the risk of a burst pipe.
3. Monitor the Thawing Process
Thaw the pipes carefully using a gradual method, such as:
Hair Dryer: Start at the end closest to the faucet and work your way back. Use a hair dryer to warm the pipe, moving it along the length of the frozen area.
Space Heater: Use a portable space heater near the frozen pipes to warm the surrounding air, but keep it a safe distance to avoid fire hazards.
Hot Towels: Soak towels in hot water and wrap them around the frozen sections of the pipe.
Avoid using an open flame (such as a blowtorch) as it can cause the pipe to weaken, melt too quickly, or even catch fire.

4. Keep an Eye on Leaks
Once the pipes thaw, check for leaks or cracks, which may have been caused by the freezing. If you detect any, turn off the water supply and call a plumber.
5. Re-insulate Pipes
After thawing the pipes, insulate them to prevent future freezing. You can use foam pipe insulation, heat tape, or wrap the pipes in blankets.
