IRS to remain staffed for first five days of shutdown (02-02-26)



According to the updated 2026 Lapsed Appropriations Contingency Plan, IRS operations will continue to be fully funded for the first five days of a government shutdown.



The IRS will continue to fund their operations with appropriations remaining from the Inflation Reduction Act. This means there will be little to no impact on IRS operations from the government shutdown for these initial five days as filing season gets underway.



The Contingency Plan also identifies which functions may continue beyond day five. However, if a shutdown is prolonged, disruptions are possible. When the government shut down for 43 days in late 2025, the IRS furloughed almost half of its workforce and paused most operations, including taxpayer call sites.

NEW MICHIGAN TAX CREDIT GOES INTO EFFECT TODAY!

The State of Michigan Treasury approved an expansion of the Michigan EITC credit calling it the "Michigan Working Families Tax Credit. This expansion increases the EITC credit from 6% of the federal EITC to 30%. This credit expansion is retroactive to the 2022 tax year. The new expansion goes into effect today 02/13/2024 and will begin issuing supplemental check payments over a 5-to-6 week period to provide eligible taxpayers who have already filed their taxes with the remaining 24% portion of the credit.

These paper check payments will be issued to the most recent address on file with Treasury. Treasury routinely updates taxpayer address records based on current tax filings, so your address should be up to date. However, if you have moved frequently or recently and have concerns about your address accuracy, you can manually update it through IIT eService. Visit how to change your address with Treasury for more information.

Do not file an amended 2022 individual income tax return in an attempt to change your address or claim the increased Michigan EITC.
