Had a great time at Good Morning Springfield today at the new The U on Ozarks Tech’s campus! What an impressive building!
I definitely got to nerd out a bit, the whole discussion was centered on local housing: how to improve affordability, where we can build, and the real challenges buyers and renters are facing right now.
My biggest takeaway? It costs $40,000 MORE to build an average home to code today than it did in 2009 (even after adjusting for inflation). We all want safe, well-built homes, but it makes you wonder; when is too much, too much? Are homes really that much safer now than they were in 2009? Trimming back some of these requirements could immediately lower upfront costs for hopeful homebuyers.
Huge shoutout to Angie Mullings for serving on the panel and sharing 30 years of industry wisdom with us today!
