Spafford Leasing Associates, Inc. is frequently asked to provide aggressive lease structures to startups; however, we typically do not do so due to early-stage credit risk and high failure rates (per Dun & Bradstreet data). As a result, most early-stage companies are financed by owner-family capital rather than institutional credit.

For creditworthy companies—generally in the Fortune 1000 category—and transactions of $250,000 and above, we offer lease rates in the 2%–4% range and can assume unguaranteed residual positions to achieve a market-based overall yield. This is supported by our expertise in residual valuation and our industry relationships for remarketing and realizing those residuals.

Our largest residual-based leasing relationship has been with Newmont Mining Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, where we reached approximately $15 million in residual-priced transactions across the company and its subsidiaries.

We specialize in residual valuation. Of the approximately 4,000 banks in the United States, the vast majority—outside of the largest institutions—primarily provide commercial loans. We structure leases. When strong credit and well-supported residual values are properly aligned, the result is often a meaningfully lower effective cost than traditional bank financing—particularly from banks that do not offer leasing, which is the majority.

It has been our specialty for decades.

Industry Opportunity – Wide-Web Vacuum Metallizing Line (North America)

A 96” wide-web year 2019-2020 TopMet 2450 vacuum metallizer located in the Northeast United States is expected to become available for new operating arrangements in the near term.

Rather than removing the equipment located in Ct which weighs approximately 40 tons, we are exploring whether the line could continue operating in place with a qualified industry partner.

Possible structures could include:

• Contract operating arrangement
• Throughput-based production partnership
• Long-term lease to an experienced metallizing operator
• Strategic supply relationship with film producers or converters

The line has historically supported metallized flexible packaging and barrier film production.

We would welcome discussions with:

• Metallizing operators
• Flexible packaging converters
• Film producers
• Industry partners familiar with metallized film markets

We are presently reviewing secondary-market values for TopMet 2450 HiRes metallizers (2018–2020 models) and related vacuum coating equipment.

😂 Sunday Humour ….. from memories…..and some lease structuring (protective) creativity!👍

Over the years since 1989, SLA has leased some unusual assets. Two standouts:

🏈 A high school turf field for the Town of South Windsor – $1.5 million.
🛢️ 30,000 automated containers for the City of Springfield – another $1.8 million ($60 each).

The bank wanted one lump payment and a container-by-container repossession plan. I told them: “Picture a repo team, or me 😂, chasing 30,000 trash barrels — excuse me, automated containers — down Main Street…” The bank SVP did not want to help😂 in that unlikely municipal event. These automated containers are everywhere now and only requires one person on the truck, not two, saving money.

Fun memories and proof that municipal leasing is about unique structuring:
• The town or city gets what it needs.
• The bank gets secured.
• And no one has to repossess the 50-yard line or an automated container.
