FORBES GIVES OUT ITS SCIENCE AWARDS FOR 2020

Commercial space sector takes the cake as new technologies were launched in 2020.

BEST PRODUCT: Leolabs’ Collision Avoidance
California-based LeoLab’s automated collision avoidance system is the winner in this category. The company bagged the award for its multiple radar systems that serve as space “traffic cops” monitoring low Earth orbit satellites for their private and government customers.
Space exploration has grown by leaps and bounds in the past year and in the coming years hundreds of satellites would be placed in low earth orbit or LEO. There are plans to offer high-end internet coverage to remote regions by top companies and satellites are better positioned to receive and transmit data in LEO.

MOST INTRIGUING NEWCOMER: Zed Fellowship
The award went to the Zed Factor Fellowship that is empowering talent from underrepresented backgrounds in the aerospace industry by connecting them with mentors and paid internships.
The participants will be expected to give back to their communities by mentoring youth in their community or building a program in their high school.

MOST DISRUPTIVE INNOVATOR: Elon Musk
There are no prizes for guessing that the Most Disruptive Innovator Award went to Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket sent NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the International Space Station, making it the first launch of astronauts to orbit from the U.S. after 2011. It was the first instance of humans being sent to orbit on a privately owned spacecraft. In December the company did another test of the prototype rocket to be sent to Mars.

OUTSTANDING FIRM: Rocket Lab
Los Angeles-based Rocket Lab builds rockets for the small satellite technology market. It made its sixth successful satellite launch and the 17th Electron flight in December 2020. The company’s expertise will be useful for customers who lack the technology to build their own satellites.

THE FORBES PERSON OF THE YEAR IN SCIENCE: Jim Bridenstine
Jim Bridenstine as NASA administrator ensured the space agency got back to sending astronauts to space and made significant progress on the Moon to Mars exploration strategy. Forbes says the most remarkable achievement is that he earned accolades from both Republican and Democrat space enthusiasts.

FORBES FORECAST: To The Moon — And The Stock Market
The prediction is in the summer of 2021 the world’s first private spacecraft will land on the Moon. The mission will be the first for NASA in 2021 as it enhances plans to return to the Moon. According to Forbes Awards judge some space companies may enter the stock markets in 2021.
