Christmas trees have been around since the 1500s, some say even earlier, and have become an integral part of the Christmas festivities.

Just like the celebrations, the time you choose to take down your Christmas tree is completely at your discretion. Many people take theirs down right after the opening of gifts on Boxing Day, and others leave it up until New Year’s Day, or even for a while after. However, if you’re one of those people who simply can’t seem to get around the depressing chore, National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day may present you with the perfect opportunity.

Founded by the ‘Queen of Holidays’, Jace Shoemaker-Galloway, the day is celebrated annually on January 6. This day is vital in Christmas history, as it marks the 12th and last day of Christmas, and is the day Epiphany takes place.

Epiphany is a feast day, celebrating the revelation of God as Jesus Christ. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates Jesus’ physical manifestation to the Gentiles by the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. Eastern Christians, on the other hand, commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, marking his manifestation to the world as the Son of God. The earliest reference to Epiphany as a Christian feast was in 361 A.D.

National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day was created to add some excitement to the usually difficult process of letting go of the festive Christmas season. Take down your trees and usher in a new season.🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

Happy Carver Day!

Carver devised methods to improve soils depleted by repeated cotton plantings. He urged farmers and other agricultural experts to restore nitrogen to their grounds through systematic crop rotation, such as alternating cotton crops with plantings of sweet potatoes or legumes (such as peanuts, soybeans, and cowpeas). These crops both restored nitrogen to the soil and were safe to eat.

Following the crop, rotation practice resulted in higher cotton yields and provided farmers with additional cash crops. Carver created an agricultural extension program for Alabama similar to his alma mater, Iowa State, to train farmers to rotate and cultivate the new crops. To promote better nutrition in the South, he widely disseminated recipes that used alternative crops.

Carver received the Roosevelt Medal in 1939 for saving Southern agriculture, which later played a role in feeding the United States during the Second World War. It was also why Carver’s hometown was declared a historic site after his death on January 5, 1943. These innovative new farming methods were groundbreaking. They had such a lasting impact on the world of agriculture that Theodore Roosevelt later named January 5 Carver Day in honor of the man himself.

The beginning of Carver Day has become a day to celebrate the incredible agricultural inventions of Carver. It has also become an important day as it is one of the few national days that honor an African American figure — and a scientist at that.

Happy National Trivia Day!!

One of the first forms of what we know today as a trivia game debuted on the 1940s radio program “Take It or Leave It”. Not too long after this in 1964, “Jeopardy!” entered millions of Americans’ homes through television and remains arguably America’s most iconic quiz show.

At the same time during the 60s, trivia night swept across college campuses all over the US (think competitive and social plus beer). Then, in the 70s, pub quizzes emerged in the United Kingdom to entice people to head to their local pubs on traditionally slower evenings.

As trivia continued to gain momentum, Trivial Pursuit emerged in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1979 thanks to Chris Haney and Scott Abbott, becoming one of the world’s most famous board games. Since then, our love for obscure facts continues to take the world by storm through online gaming and other technology-driven formats.

While some people may find trivia “trivial,” it can be pretty serious business for others. Leagues and competitions are common across the globe and the competitive nature of some has led to drastic measures including cheating. Mobile phones are often banned from competitions to deter secret searches for answers.

At the end of the day, it’s the silly facts and camaraderie that endear trivia to so many competitively social people.

Happy Fruitcake Toss Day!!

Fruitcake Toss Day is on January 3. On this day, take that fruitcake you never got around to eating and send it spiraling hundreds or thousands of feet into the air, depending on the power of your throwing arm. Every year, a few hundred people gather in downtown Manitou Springs, Colorado, to hurl hundreds of fruitcakes into the air by hand, cannon, or slingshot. Fruitcakes last for ages, so don’t throw out that fruitcake we both know no one in your home will eat; throw it into the air!

December 14 is Monkey Day! We may look just a bit different from our primate pals, but we shouldn’t forget that we share a common ancestor with them in chimpanzees! Warm up those vocal cords and get ready to unleash your wildest calls and cries in observance of this holiday, which celebrates not just monkeys, but everything simian.

Today we celebrate National Violin Day!!

Whether you adore country pickin’ on the fiddle or Stravinsky compositions in the concert hall, violins have a sound easily adaptable to a variety of musical genres. They haven’t always looked the same since their heyday during the 16th century, but the violin has a recognizable tone and appearance. Some of the most valued instruments have sold for millions of dollars at auction. National Violin Day on December 13 recognizes the impact and cultural contributions of a most versatile instrument.

Happy Celebrate Shelter Pets Day!!
We celebrate shelter pets on Celebrate Shelter Pets Day, which is observed on December 5 every year. The day brings awareness to pets such as dogs and cats that are in shelters. A lot of people often think of adopting a pet from a shelter home, but they don’t always follow through with that thought because they think there is something wrong with shelter pets. They are wrong. Most people who have adopted shelter pets can testify that shelter groups are full of great pets that provide companionship. There are, unfortunately, some pets in the shelter that are deemed unadoptable because of fear, perceived aggression, or anxiety, but even these issues can be managed if addressed properly.
